Giving Tech a Second Life: Supporting Accessibility with a Meaningful Donation

How our unused monitors are now helping visually impaired people in Austria

What happens to office equipment when it’s no longer in use? For us, the answer was simple: give it a second life…and a meaningful one.

We recently donated several monitors to the Hilfsgemeinschaft der Blinden und Sehschwachen Österreichs, a Vienna-based non-profit that has been supporting blind and visually impaired people across Austria for 90 years. With more than 6,000 members and countless projects, workshops, and services, they’re a true force for accessibility and inclusion.

How the monitors help

The monitors we donated will be paired with devices that magnify printed text like books, magazines, and newspapers. This setup allows people with strong visual impairments to read independently – a small technological bridge with a big impact on everyday life.

From practical tasks like reading mail to enjoying a favorite novel, this equipment helps restore autonomy, dignity, and connection to the world.

A person uses a video magnifier to read a newspaper article on a large monitor in an office, highlighting accessibility, with a microfilm reader and papers nearby. Sunlight enters through the window in the background.

More than a donation, a shared mission

The Hilfsgemeinschaft is Austria’s largest self-help organization for blind and visually impaired people, representing the interests of over 300,000 individuals. Their work is funded by donations and carried out by a dedicated team of staff and volunteers.

They offer free consultations, organize educational workshops, and drive forward projects that improve accessibility in all areas of life – from digital inclusion to public space navigation.

Meet AUGust: The mascot with a mission

When we made the donation, we were also introduced to AUGust, the organization’s cheerful mascot: a mole wearing dark glasses and a yellow armband. AUGust represents curiosity, cleverness, and confidence – and now lives in our office as a plush reminder that social sustainability starts with people.

A group of computer monitors is stacked on the floor in front of a table with another monitor, keyboard, and mouse, showing how tech donation can give old devices a second life. Beside them stands a mole cartoon figure with a German sign about 90 years together.

Reusing with purpose

This initiative is part of our broader commitment to social sustainability. By repurposing equipment instead of discarding it, we reduce waste and support communities where a small gesture can make a big difference.

We’re proud to support the work of the Hilfsgemeinschaft and their mission of making the world more accessible.
